Red Vehicles Attract More Bird Droppings

20120624-204845.jpg

The Daily Mail in the UK is reporting a new study has shown red vehicles attract more bird droppings than any other colour. Researchers looked at more than 1,400 vehicles in five different cities. The most ‘popular’ colours for birds are the following:

Red – 18%
Blue – 14%
Black – 11%
White – 7%
Grey/Silver – 3%
Green – 1%

While this study was conducted for a car accessories chain and the numbers may not hold true for every city it’s interesting note the wide variation in numbers. Red isn’t the most popular vehicle colour in the UK by the way, according to the AA silver is.

Ken Block Gymkhana 5 – Out July 9th

If you have been following us for a while you know the RedlineNoth Team has an affinity for rally car driver Ken Block and his Gymkhana video series. News today that the next edition Gymkhana series, Gymkhana 5, will debut on July 9th. Similar to Gymkhana 4, the new video will be in partnership with DC Shoes. For more info the official press release is below.

JUNE 18th, 2012 – Huntington Beach, California – After much anticipation, Ken Block and DC Shoes are proud to announce the coming of Gymkhana FIVE, which will debut globally on Monday, July 9th at 10 AM EST via the DC Shoes YouTube channel. Filmed on the streets of San Francisco, California, Gymkhana FIVE builds on the previous successes of the Gymkhana viral video series and it’s 140+ million views.

“My idea for Gymkhana FIVE was simple,” said Block. “I wanted to build on the ultimate playground concept from Gymkhana THREE, and bring the franchise back to that raw and fast feel that the earlier videos had. I’ve always wanted to film a Gymkhana video in a city and there are few places as unique and iconic with such amazing topography as San Francisco. While movies like Bullit and various chase scenes have tried to use San Francisco to the fullest, I’m pretty confident that I’ve proven there was a lot left to be done on those amazing streets!”

Without question, the streets of San Francisco make Gymkhana FIVE the most unique project to date in the franchise’s history. And for good measure, a few world records and a surprise guest have been thrown in too. Making a return for the second year in a row is Block’s Ford Fiesta H.F.H.V. racecar, which can be seen slaying its tires on the streets of San Francisco globally on the July 9th release date. For select media and action sport VIPs, DC will premiere the video on Friday, June 29th during Summer X Games 18.

Vehicle to Home Charging

How a vehicle to home system works

One aspect of electric vehicle adoption that isn’t always covered in the press is energy security.  This relates to reduced dependence on foreign oil, but also includes mobile power.  For example, in the aftermath of last year’s earthquake in Japan, or the 2003 blackout that hit the North Eastern United States and Eastern Canada imagine having thousands of electric vehicles that could feed power back into people’s homes providing crucial energy for heating, communications equipment or other necessary equipment.

While the electric vehicles on road today don’t have that capability yet, they soon could. Major automobile manufacturers are aware of this potential and are starting to take steps to make this happen.

Toyota Motor Corporation announced recently they have developed a vehicle to home system (V2H) for mutual sharing of electricity between electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids and full battery electric vehicles) and buildings.  A fully charged plug-in Prius with a full tank of gasoline could theoretically supply power for an average Japanese home for four days (approximately 10 kWh).

The V2H system will be tested in Japan in approximately ten households at the end of 2012 as part of the Toyota City Project. Nissan is also working on a similar system for their electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf. While it may be a number of years before a system such as this would be commercially available, however, this is potentially one more benefit to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Saab 9-3 Reincarnated as an Electric Vehicle?

20120613-203100.jpg

News today that Saab design and production facilities have been purchased by a group of Japanese and Chinese investors and will produce an electric version of the Saab 9-3 sedan.

Whether the newly reborn Saab will be able to make a profit on electric vehicles, which require high R&D costs and typically make little, if any, profit will yet to be seen.

Originally an aircraft maker, GM bought a significant stake in Saab in 1989 and gained full control in 2000. As part of its restructuring during the recent financial crisis GM divested itself of Saab. With recent ownership changes and failure to secure financing, Saab was in real danger of disappearing.

Interesting to note that the deal does not include the Saab brand. Whether that is a formality and will be announced later is unknown at this time.

Germany Tour Part 1 – Porsche Factory and Porsche Museum

In honour of Germany’s first victory in the Euro 2012 tournament we thought it made sense to do this post today about Germany’s Porsche.

A RedlineNorth community member recently took a trip of a lifetime to Germany to tour some of the holiest car sites in the world including the Porsche factory in Leipzig and the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. A life long Porsche fan and current Cayman owner, he was kind enough to share his trip photos from this ultimate Porsche experience.

Beginning with a factory tour to test drive a newly ordered 2012 Panamera 4S the trip included stops at the Porsche test track as well as the Museum in Stuttgart. Here are some of the highlights from the amazing, two week adventure in Deutschland.

Subaru Underwater for Three Months – Starts on First Try

20120605-204547.jpg

This 1996 Subaru Legacy wagon spent three months under water in a shallow Finnish lake after the owner drove onto thin ice to go fishing. After pulling the car out of the lake and finding a live fish from between the bumper and the bottom tray, the fish had let out its spawn on the alternator, they drained out the oil and water in the engine. For the first minute, all that came out was water. Out of curiosity, fuel was poured into the tank and it started on the first try!

20120605-204647.jpg

Apparently the guy drove 20 km with it and commented “Still some water in the fuel, kinda lacks power” however, most of the electrics are working – the wipers, headlights and instrument panel all seem to function. The guy also cleaned the ECU with brake cleaner beforehand.

Who knew this was even possible, but I wouldn’t recommend trying this at home 🙂

Celebrity Rides

I know what you are thinking, why are we going down this route? Seriously though, it’s an endless topic and if you are into cars its well worth looking into further.  And for transparency’s sake, having loads of celebrity names on the site will not hurt our SEO rankings.

So let’s start with Canada’s own, Justin Bieber.  It should be no surprise that at only eighteen years old he wants to drive every cool car in the world and he can since the little dude made over $55 million last year according to Forbes magazine.

Here are some of the Biebes’ recent rides. The chrome plated Fisker Karma electric car which was a recent gift from buddy Ellen DeGeneres.

He sure likes his matte black rides but it seems like the chrome look is starting to be the newest fad hitting LA’s car culture.

Here is a small assortment of some over the top rides from today’s very rich pop star crowd. Beginning with Chris Brown’s Jet fighter inspired Lambo Gallardo – I guess he is not worried about standing out with the Paparrazi.

Aerosmith frontman and current American Idol judge, Steven Tyler recently purchased the world’s fastest street legal car called the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder for $1.1 million USD.

Lil Wayne – The first rapper to own a Bugatti Veyron.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ Review

Earlier this month, we accepted GM Canada’s offer to provide us with a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ test vehicle to do a one week evaluation. In doing the review we drove the Chevy Sonic in both urban and rural environments to experience first hand what GM’s newest subcompact product is all about.  And I have to say, it did not disappoint and exceeded our expectations overall of what a subcompact car should be.  From its unique and distinctive styling, well appointed interior, powerful turbo engine, fun, six speed manual transmission and eco-friendly footprint it really is a solid car able to compete with the best cars in its class.

Our tester was a top of the line 5 door LTZ model which comes with all the bells and whistles including:

  • 1.4L Turbocharged ECOTEC four cylinder engine with 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque at 2500 RPM
  • 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive
  • Air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows, locks and mirrors, cruise control, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, USB port and auxiliary audio input jack, and Bluetooth: hands free phone and audio connectivity.
  • 17 inch painted aluminum wheels
  • Trunk/storage space – 19 cubic feet with rear seats up and 30.7 cubic feet with rear seats folded down – based on GM Canada’s vehicle information
  • $20,495 MSRP based on GM Canada’s website as of May 27, 2012

Some key facts about the Chevy Sonic:

  • Currently built in GM’s Lake Orion, Michigan plant, the Sonic is the only Subcompact car sold in North America manufactured within the United States.
  • This is really great news for us in North America as it signals more good things to come from GM in the way of innovative and high quality products.

With its modern, machined metal look and driver focused feel the Sonic’s interior has the appearance of a much more expensive automobile inside.

We found the Sonic’s driver and passenger visibility to be very good overall which is reassuring since there has been some recent criticism about driver visibility within the subcompact vehicle segment.

And with a highway fuel consumption rating of 5.1 L/100 KM as based on GM Canada’s manufacturer information the Sonic is very fuel efficient even for its class.  An effective eco-feature with the six speed manual transmission is a notification on the dash of when to shift to a higher gear in order to save fuel.  While it’s hard to say if this feature will really change anyone’s driving behaviour, it is very cool to know what the optimal shift times are.

The nimble Sonic is a blast to drive. When accelerating off the line it felt solid, ready to give you more. The engine is very responsive as is both steering and braking.  The ride is elegantly quiet and smooth.  Literally, the only complaint over the week was the fact that there was not an armrest on the passenger seat, or a high enough centre console for the passenger to rest an arm – not exactly a big deal in the whole scheme of things.

Competitors to the Sonic in this subcompact class include the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa and the Mazda 2.

Our overall rating for the Chevrolet Sonic is a 4.5 out of 5. With this type of stellar performance, it should be at the top of your list if you are in the market for a new sporty subcompact.
