A Porsche 911 that does it all

Back in December, we posted coverage on Urban Outlaw, a video bio about the life of Magnus Walker, the famed LA based, rebel Porsche customizer. Well, recently we came across another epic story we want to share that adds to the mystique of the sports car from Deutschland’s city of Stuttgart.

A fiction writer by trade, Jack Olsen taught himself how to work on cars while also building himself the ultimate garage called the 12-Gauge Garage. Inside this magnificent garage, he has created a beautiful one-off Porsche 911 called Black Beauty II. Upon first glance, Jack’s Porsche looks like a sixties or seventies model but actually, it combines four decades of 911 parts ranging from 1965 through to 2000. Comprised of a lightweight body from 1972, the transaxle from 1977, the brakes from a 1986 Turbo and the engine from 1995 model it truly is one of a kind. And with a fighting weight of only 2,400 pounds and 272 horsepower at the crank, the old girl can really move around the track.

But the truly amazing part of this story is how this Porsche does it all – whether it’s trips with the family to 7-11, Sunday afternoon drives or full-fledged track days, Jack uses this car to do what it was designed for – drive smooth and fast.  In today’s age of Trailer Queens and Barrett-Jackson auctions, Jack’s passion and purity of using his sports car is truly inspiring.  It also helps that Jack lives in sunny California with its spectacular roads and tracks all within a short drive.

To experience this awesome Porsche for yourself take some time to watch the video below.

Urban Outlaw

Urban Outlaw is a portrait of Magnus Walker, the rebel Porsche customizer who turned a hobby into an obsession, and an obsession into a successful business. From a workshop in downtown Los Angeles, Magnus obsessively harvests fragments from donor 911s, grafting them onto vintage frames to create one-off automobiles with the spirit of Ferdinand Porsche but an ethos entirely his own.  Specializing in 1964-1972 models, Magnus is a genius fabricator and a real life artist of the automotive industry.

For any enthusiast, this is a must see video and I guarantee after watching you will be interested in Porsches if you were not interested before.

RedlineNorth News Round Up

The key auto news highlights from the last week include Chevrolet launching their new 2013 NASCAR Sprint car and confirming they will be selling a  production version starting in August 2013. This new rear-wheel-drive model will be based on GM Australia’s Holden Commodore platform currently being used in the Camaro. Chevrolet plans to sell the Australian built SS in North America as a low-volume, high-performance sedan.

There is now another great destination for road trips as Porsche has just broken ground on its new US headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.  The new location will include a test track and museum and will certainly become a “must see” destination for any Porsche enthusiast.  In other news, the LA Auto show opened to the public on Friday so this week should be busy as the coverage starts appearing in the mainstream press.

Dutch Thieves Stealing Porsche Headlights

Now it may seem like nothing new to see a headline titled “Porsche stolen” but this is very different since thieves are not stealing the whole car but just the headlights. First reported in Amsterdam by the Dutch press; apparently, the HID headlights of the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne are being targeted because they make great lights for growing marijuana.  They are the first choice because they are ultra bright and give off lots of heat while using very little electricity which is key when trying to stay under the radar of the utility companies.

Dutch Thieves in Action

Hopefully, this trend does not spread as it would be a shame if the meaning of “lights out” for Porsche becomes something unrelated to their success on the racetrack.

RedlineNorth in Vienna, Austria

Team RedlineNorth recently traveled to Vienna, Austria to experience the sights and sounds of one of the most magnificent cities in the world. With Austria’s strong economy and a history of liking the “finer things” the local Viennese have some nice rides.  Here is a taste of what you will see on a typical day in Vienna.

With its close proximity to Germany, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW’s are the standard cars most Viennese drive. In our travels we tried to find some vehicles less popular in North America.  Here is an assortment of American, French, English and German models currently found on the streets of Vienna.

24 Hours of Le Mans

With this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans wrapping up over the weekend we thought it was an appropriate time to look at this incredible race.

The 24 hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest active endurance auto race having been held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France. This year’s race was historic for a number of reasons as it was the 80th anniversary and first win by a hybrid-powered car.

With the no.1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro of Andre Lotterer-Marcel Fassler-Benoit Treluyer taking the checkered flag on Sunday, Audi Sport secured its spot in automotive history with an 11th win to put them second on the all time win list only behind Porsche’s 16 overall victories. With the 11 victories coming in 13 attempts, Audi Sport has come to define what it takes as a racing team in today’s modern era to win the Holy Grail of endurance which is Le Mans.

All these victories are not ending at the racetrack as Audi has been leveraging their experience to produce some of the world best performance vehicles. You only have to look at Audi’s amazing line-R8, A8, A6, S5 and S4 models to see first-hand how the former NASCAR saying of a “win on Sunday” translates to “sell on Monday”.

Here are some images from the weekend action along with the 2012 Le Mans trailer video.

Germany Tour Part 1 – Porsche Factory and Porsche Museum

In honour of Germany’s first victory in the Euro 2012 tournament we thought it made sense to do this post today about Germany’s Porsche.

A RedlineNorth community member recently took a trip of a lifetime to Germany to tour some of the holiest car sites in the world including the Porsche factory in Leipzig and the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. A life long Porsche fan and current Cayman owner, he was kind enough to share his trip photos from this ultimate Porsche experience.

Beginning with a factory tour to test drive a newly ordered 2012 Panamera 4S the trip included stops at the Porsche test track as well as the Museum in Stuttgart. Here are some of the highlights from the amazing, two week adventure in Deutschland.

Ertefa Meet

Ertefa – The word apparently means “stance” in Farsi the Persian language.  Well, that may be the actual translation but it also means well organized, respectful and very popular car show/meets.  Organized by a group of auto enthusiasts based in the Toronto area, the Ertefa meets take place on Thursday nights from 9PM – 12 PM and attracts a wide range of cars at all different levels of modifications from clean and stock to ultimate track machines.  With on-going communications with the police, the event has rules in place so not to bring unwanted trouble to the car show.  Having attended a few times in my S2000, I can say it is a bright light in the local car scene.

If you are interested in the auto scene at all these are a must see event in the GTA. On a typical evening, you will see all types of cars including; Lambos, Porsches, BMW’s, Japanese cars, American muscle, as well anything you have ever imagined on two wheels including the baddest tow truck around.

Catering to the car folks in the massive suburbs of the 4th largest city in North America, the turnout is impressive with over 450-500 cars coming out weekly.  Growing up in a small town in Southwestern, Ontario, I could not have imagined seeing something like this regularly as these types of events only happened in California or aired on the SPEED Channel.

If you are ever in the GTA and looking for a local auto event come by and check it out.  The location does move around but currently it is in the Toronto suburb called Woodbridge at the Dave & Buster’s Restaurant parking lot so make sure to check out their Facebook page to confirm the location.

Toronto Spring Classic Car Auction

I recently had the opportunity to check out the Toronto Spring Classic Car Auction held at the International Centre. Over the years, I have come to this show to experience the sights and sounds of the classic car scene in action and to keep informed on local prices. Attending in person, is quite the visceral experience as being up close with these vintage machines as they fire up their V8 engines to go up on the block is as close to Barrett- Jackson’s as you can get in Toronto.

I vividly remember the auction in the early 2000s and seeing top quality cars including; matching number Chevelles, 60s Corvettes and Mopar’s such as Chargers, Challengers and Javelins all rolling off the block in the range of 75K-80K and for the trailer queens you would see upwards of 100K bids. Well, those days are definitely over, and the new era is far more realistic and more interesting as there are now bargains to be had for anyone with cash.  Overall, prices of classic cars and trucks are down significantly since the peak in the Fall of 2007 before the global recession really took hold. For the full details of what things sold for check out final sales data. And with the added meltdown of the US economy and housing market over the past few years, far less US buyers are attending these types of Canadian events which has dramatically lowered overall values.

One local dealer who sells a tonne of cars at the auction is Segal Motorcar Company. They always bring some of the cleanest and most pristine high end exotics to the auction block including Porsches, Ferraris, Aston Martins, Maseratis and the odd Bentley.

Here are some of the highlights from the auction.

The next one is scheduled for October and is a must attend event if you are into classic cars.  And if you are lucky enough to be in a position to purchase one, just remember to bring your chequebook because for sure, there’s something for sale that would look great in your driveway.
