For those who love BMW e36 (M3) models?

If you like older BMWs and specifically if BMW e36’s are your thing you need to check out the Better music video from American R&B singer Khalid.

We’d love to hear the whole story of how this classic BMW model was selected for the video.  It would be interesting to know if Khalid had a hand in the decision making since they are actually older than him by a few years as he was only 20 at the time.

Nevertheless, we 100% approve of the video’s creative direction and hope no BMW was injured or maimed during production. A fun, follow-up story would be to learn the full details from those lucky BMW owners who got to showcase their rides in the hit video.

Toyota Supra, BMW Z4 sports cars to share platform

According to a recent report from the Nikkei Asia Review, it appears the new Toyota Supra will share a platform with the next generation BMW Z4. Based on the FT-1 concept, the new Toyota Supra is a much-anticipated car as it has been over 12 years since the last Supra rolled off Toyota’s Japanese assembly line.  With thousands of enthusiasts all over the world looking forward to the prospect of a new Toyota Supra model this is very exciting news.

The report goes on to explain that the two vehicles will have different body designs, be sold under their respective brands and may be built by the automakers by 2017.

With all the recent winter weather here in Toronto, Christmas is certainly in the air.  And with only 8 days left until the big day, we wanted to give you some extra Christmas cheer. So we came across a very cool video that provides both Xmas cheer along with a glimpse of some exotic super cars.  Check out this choral choir of BMWs, Lambos, Ferraris, Formula One cars and Bugattis.

Love Hurts

My name is Ryan and I’m a friend of RedlineNorth. This is my rant. To borrow a quote from Scottish Rockers, Nazareth and their 1970s hit “Love Hurts” this is especially true when you are talking about older luxury cars. I truly love cars, especially, older high-end models in the $3,000-$10,000 price range and my specialty is finding, buying and driving them into the ground.

2002 BMW M3 autopazar.co.uk

2003 BMW M3

A little background on me:

  • My newest vehicle was 12 years old
  • I have covered the bases when it comes to auto breakdowns
  • I have been a customer seeking an elusive European car part at one time or another at the local auto junkyard
  • I use only regular gas
  • Occasionally, I do add a fuel additive or two
  • In winter, I do use gas line antifreeze to combat Canada’s freezing temps
  • Based on today’s theory that luxury cars using high-end synthetic oil can travel over 5,000 kilometers before an oil change –
    • I always push them to at least 7,000 KM
    • Since I feel that taxing oil is not just the government’s job
    • And besides isn’t this how they test engines?

As for my purchase criteria of “high end” cars, here’s my motto and please note “high end” is a subjective term.  Firstly, if the vehicle has over 160,000 km, and/or once retailed for over $50K or has rims and a stereo that’s of equal or greater value than the rest of the car – it’s likely on my radar for potential purchase.

Unfortunately, my purchased rides don’t seem to survive long with my combination of a heavy foot and focus on pure driving pleasure.  Therefore, based on this reality – it is important to always be ready to recruit new prospects, so I keep my feelers out.  Now, this applies to more than just friends and co-workers since you must continually scour classified ads, Autotrader, Kijii, eBay, frequent car lots, eavesdrop at the mechanics’ shop and most importantly make time to pull over when you see a gem for sale on a passing lawn.

From experience I can say, turnover is high in this game and it’s not for everyone.  Sketchy, luxury car ownership runs on a 2-3 year cycle from passionate purchase to jaded dismissal. So please keep in mind that these cars will go sideways; so be sure to have CAA or some type of roadside assistance. Since for sure the On Star, DVD based navigation and/or Bluetooth will be long expired, broken or never existed.  Once again, at some time you will need a lift to the garage – so please splurge for the extra tow coverage.

Although the game is not for everyone the rules are simple and the rewards are immeasurable.

Here is my best advice for someone starting out today:

  • Downgrade your insurance to liability only
  • Have ‘ a guy’ or ‘a handful of guys’ on standby who can fix cars and find parts
  • Be familiar with the sounds and smells of a lemon and/or pending engine disaster
  • Never forget the joy of riding a bicycle
  • Have access to a “Black Book”
  • Keep your supportive partner
  • Appreciate ‘flossin’
  • Understand your neighbours will notice…and judge you
  • Accept that the purchase and sale transaction of your rides will always be weird.

Sketchy luxury car ownership is in some ways practical since most European whips are designed and engineered like works of art and are wickedly fast.  And the rewards are worth it since your car is to be used daily so you need to enjoy driving it.

For example, a 2014 Kia might technically be capable of reaching 200 kilometers per hour, but the experience is nothing compared to being at the wheel of a 2000 BMW M3 or an S4 Audi of the same vintage.  It’s better to be a once was than a never could be when travelling at high speeds.

As well, rap music is an integral influence to my “Love Hurts” philosophy so please look at the following as reference to the immortal beats and remind yourself what it takes to ball in an older, high-end luxury ride.

1)            The inc ride – Masta Ace Incorporated

2)            Whutcha Want? – Nine

3)            Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz – Lost Boyz

4)            Born to Roll – Masta Ace

5)            Lacville ’79 – Devin the Dude

6)            Ridin – Chamillionaire ft. Krayzie Bone

7)            Bugatti – Ace Hood ft. Future, Rick Ross

8)            Box Chevy – Yelawolf ft. Rittz

9)            Beamer, Benz or Bentley – Lloyd Banks ft. Juelz Santana

10)         Stuntin Like My Daddy – Lil Wayne ft. Birdman

11)         Wild Boy – MGK ft. Waka Flocka Flame

In closing I want to reinforce that life is short and you bought the ticket so enjoy the ride (R.I.P. Hunter S.Thompson). So stop stressing about the gas mileage in your V8 Rover and just roll because behind the wheel you look like Christopher Moltisanti. This philosophy is way better than car payments on a new vehicle so keep pumping regular in spite of the stickers that say premium fuel required.

Hopefully, this has been helpful and maybe someday we will cross paths as I will be sure to stop if I see you in trouble at the side of the road….

Happy shopping!

BMW Designs New Bobsled

BMW North America, a US Olympic Team partner, recently announced that the U.S. Men’s Bobsled Team will race a prototype BMW two-man bobsled.  The sled was developed in cooperation between the auto manufacturer and the USA Bobsled & Skeleton Federation. BMW provided its design and engineering expertise and “…paired intelligent lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber, with optimized aerodynamics to design the new sled. The result is a significantly lighter body shell with a low and centralized center of gravity.” (Source: BMW)

In a sport where winners and losers are determined by tenths of a second, it will be interesting to see how the newly designed sled will perform in competition.  Two prototype sleds have been developed, with the first being tested in competition this weekend at the FIBT World Cup in Igls, Austria.  The second will remain in development for the remainder of the season in preparation for the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The results of yesterday’s competition show that perhaps Team USA needs to spend some extra time getting use to the new sled design.  The team only took possession of the unit the day before competition and unfortunately Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah) and Curt Tomasevicz (Shelby, Neb.) who raced with the new sled came in 14th place.

“Sometimes you have to take a big risk to prepare for the future,” Holcomb said.  “I wanted to race it, because we only get six training runs in St. Moritz.  I wanted the extra runs in the sled, because it’ll take a little time to figure it out.  I don’t know any sled project that comes out of the box and wins, so we knew we might have to lose before we can win.” (Source: Team USA)

It will be interesting to see over the coming year how the sled performs once Team USA gets a chance to become comfortable with the new design. Is this the start of new partnerships between the auto makers and national Olympic teams leveraging the former’s aerodynamic design experience? Likely not, but time will tell.

New BMW M5 ‘Bullet’ Video

BMW Canada have released a new video showing their M5 sedan crashing through some objects at high speed in the desert. The video appears to be shot with high speed camera and the footage slowed down into what BMW calls High Performance Art. The cinematography in this video is very impressive and, oh yeah, the car is mildly impressive as well! Too bad it’s going to loose its manual transmission option next year as has been widely reported.

Stretch and Poke May 2012

On the last Sunday in May, the RedlineNorth Team cruised up to Toronto’s Downsview Park to check out the first of the Stretch and Poke event series.   Stretch and Poke is a group of enthusiasts within the tuner scene who focus on creating cars with aggressive wheel fitment set-ups.   The event does not discriminate by brand or model and it showed as attendees came in all different styles of sedans, convertibles and trucks. Whether your thing is donks, lowriders, drifting, modified tuners or track cars there is a scene for everyone today in the Greater Toronto Area.

Here are some photos from the solid season opener event.  It’s not for everyone but you do have to respect the time, money and hard work that goes into fabricating these modified machines.

For more on the Stretch and Poke scene be sure to check out their official website and video.

Ertefa Meet

Ertefa – The word apparently means “stance” in Farsi the Persian language.  Well, that may be the actual translation but it also means well organized, respectful and very popular car show/meets.  Organized by a group of auto enthusiasts based in the Toronto area, the Ertefa meets take place on Thursday nights from 9PM – 12 PM and attracts a wide range of cars at all different levels of modifications from clean and stock to ultimate track machines.  With on-going communications with the police, the event has rules in place so not to bring unwanted trouble to the car show.  Having attended a few times in my S2000, I can say it is a bright light in the local car scene.

If you are interested in the auto scene at all these are a must see event in the GTA. On a typical evening, you will see all types of cars including; Lambos, Porsches, BMW’s, Japanese cars, American muscle, as well anything you have ever imagined on two wheels including the baddest tow truck around.

Catering to the car folks in the massive suburbs of the 4th largest city in North America, the turnout is impressive with over 450-500 cars coming out weekly.  Growing up in a small town in Southwestern, Ontario, I could not have imagined seeing something like this regularly as these types of events only happened in California or aired on the SPEED Channel.

If you are ever in the GTA and looking for a local auto event come by and check it out.  The location does move around but currently it is in the Toronto suburb called Woodbridge at the Dave & Buster’s Restaurant parking lot so make sure to check out their Facebook page to confirm the location.
