Moparfest 2012

During a glorious recent August weekend, Team RedlineNorth headed down to Southwestern Ontario’s Moparfest. With close to 2,000 show vehicles and almost 25,000 spectators Moparfest is now Canada’s largest all Mopar show and is a sight to be experienced for any car enthusiast. Started 32 years ago by a few friends with a shared love of Mopar cars the show has grown into a massive charity event that takes over the town of New Hamburg, Ontario for one weekend a year.  The annual event is a fundraiser for the local community with proceeds totaling over $2.5 million dollars from the past 32 years.

Here are some amazing new and old examples of Mopar muscle and design in all their automotive glory.

The majority of the show consisted of 60s/70s muscle car models including the Barracuda, Dodge Charger, Dart, Swinger, Duster, Plymouth Road Runner, Plymouth Super Bee, Plymouth Satellite and a few rare Superbird models. In addition, there were a wide range of Fargo trucks as well as luxury sedans including the Chrysler Cordoba and New Yorker models with a few jeeps and AMC cars in between. All in all, an amazing showcase put on right here in the heartland of Ontario.  Who knew there was so much Mopar pride north of the border?

Wheels on the Danforth

True to our roots of covering local events, the RedlineNorth team dropped into a Toronto car show called Wheels on the Danforth on Saturday, August 11th. Hosted by the Crossroads of the Danforth BIA which is made up of the businesses and property owners on Danforth Ave. between Victoria Park Avenue and Scotia Road (just east of Warden Avenue).

1968 Dodge Charger

Unfortunately, it rained throughout the day so overall turnout of classic cars was far lower than last year’s 200. Nevertheless, there was an assortment of 60s muscle, 40s-50s classics and a few Hot Rods in between.

EV Day Toronto – Sunday August 11th

Just a reminder for those readers in the Toronto area EV Day is happening tomorrow at Yonge & Dundas Square.  There is a free ride and drive of the latest electric vehicles at the event so if you’ve ever wanted to try driving an electric vehicle here’s your chance.

True Playaz Lowrider Show – July 28

As our RedlineNorth mandate states, we promise coverage of a wide assortment of auto events so true to form we checked out a local low rider show called – True Playaz – Candy On Chrome.

From custom paint and pin stripping, to chromed out chassis and frames and trunks full of speakers and batteries that power monster hydraulics, the entire low rider scene is an enthusiast’s dream.

As we walked the show it had a very 90s feel from the rhythmic hip hop beats in the background to the many exquisite rides including several examples of the infamous 1964 Impala immortalized in the 1991 film Boyz in the Hood.  Throughout the afternoon you could almost see Ice Cube’s character Doughboy pulling up and wanting to show his ride off in the Toronto parking lot.

Unfortunately, we missed the actual competition that includes the hopping of the cars but were able to get some solid pics of the different rides.  Yes, this scene is totally niche but very cool nonetheless, and you must respect the countless hours of hard work and enthusiasm that goes into creating these one-of-a-kind beauties.  The attendees brought a wide range of daily drivers and trailer queens of all decades and brands but the majority of the low riders were GM models from the 60s, 80s and 90s.

Italian car night at La Paloma in Woodbridge

With the summer upon us and the evenings long and warm, the local auto cruise nights are now in full effect. Recently, the RedlineNorth team checked out a hidden gem, an Italian car night at the Woodbridge Gelateria & Café called La Paloma. Taking place every Thursday night in the La Paloma parking lot, all types of Italian makes and models come out to show their Italian pride.  In addition to Italian models there are a few German autos and some good ole American muscle of new and old which adds to the overall familia atmosphere.  If you want to have a car themed Thursday night in the GTA we suggest you arrive here at 8ish and then at 9:30 you can hit up the Ertefa meet as it is only a five minute drive on Highway 7. Here are some highlights from a mid June La Paloma car night.  Viva Italia!!!  It’s unfortunate about the Euro 2012.

Batman Tumbler and Batpod hit Toronto streets…

With the new Dark Knight Rises film opening in theatres next month the PR campaign is in high gear and the Dark Knight’s Tumbler Batmobile and Batpod were recently on display downtown Toronto.  The RedlineNorth team captured some of this recent excitement as the Bay street set checked out the Dark Knight’s two amazing rides.

Stretch and Poke May 2012

On the last Sunday in May, the RedlineNorth Team cruised up to Toronto’s Downsview Park to check out the first of the Stretch and Poke event series.   Stretch and Poke is a group of enthusiasts within the tuner scene who focus on creating cars with aggressive wheel fitment set-ups.   The event does not discriminate by brand or model and it showed as attendees came in all different styles of sedans, convertibles and trucks. Whether your thing is donks, lowriders, drifting, modified tuners or track cars there is a scene for everyone today in the Greater Toronto Area.

Here are some photos from the solid season opener event.  It’s not for everyone but you do have to respect the time, money and hard work that goes into fabricating these modified machines.

For more on the Stretch and Poke scene be sure to check out their official website and video.

Ertefa Meet

Ertefa – The word apparently means “stance” in Farsi the Persian language.  Well, that may be the actual translation but it also means well organized, respectful and very popular car show/meets.  Organized by a group of auto enthusiasts based in the Toronto area, the Ertefa meets take place on Thursday nights from 9PM – 12 PM and attracts a wide range of cars at all different levels of modifications from clean and stock to ultimate track machines.  With on-going communications with the police, the event has rules in place so not to bring unwanted trouble to the car show.  Having attended a few times in my S2000, I can say it is a bright light in the local car scene.

If you are interested in the auto scene at all these are a must see event in the GTA. On a typical evening, you will see all types of cars including; Lambos, Porsches, BMW’s, Japanese cars, American muscle, as well anything you have ever imagined on two wheels including the baddest tow truck around.

Catering to the car folks in the massive suburbs of the 4th largest city in North America, the turnout is impressive with over 450-500 cars coming out weekly.  Growing up in a small town in Southwestern, Ontario, I could not have imagined seeing something like this regularly as these types of events only happened in California or aired on the SPEED Channel.

If you are ever in the GTA and looking for a local auto event come by and check it out.  The location does move around but currently it is in the Toronto suburb called Woodbridge at the Dave & Buster’s Restaurant parking lot so make sure to check out their Facebook page to confirm the location.

The Gumball 3000 rolls into Toronto….

I really can’t think of a better way to spend a beautiful, warm, May evening than checking out the sights and sounds of the Gumball 3000 race.  Last night, as the caravan arrived in Toronto, the RedlineNorth team captured the glitz and glam of these amazing branded up supercars as they entered the closed off streets of Toronto’s Yorkville area.

Started in 1999, the Gumball 3000 is a modern day Cannonball Run which attracts international socialites and playboys from all over the globe to participate in a cross country road race. For 2012, the race has returned to its roots as racers drive the epic New York City to Los Angeles route.

With a wide range of ultra expensive models being used as street racers there is certainly something for everyone who’s into cars. Along with the cars is the equally impressive star- studded line-up of drivers who have competed in the race including Daryl Hannah, David Hasselhoff, Dennis Rodman and Tony Hawk.  The full list can be seen here. This annual event is like no other in North America. The opportunity to participate should be number one on any car enthusiasts ultimate dream wish list.

2012 Spring Mudfest at Gopher Dunes

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to spend a beautiful afternoon at Gopher Dunes in Courtland, Ontario attending the 2012 Spring Mudfest event. With over 400 trucks competing in three different mudbogs and trail sections it was a sight to see and hear. As spectators, you are able to get very close to the action which is not for the faint of heart as experiencing these trucks first hand is truly a very visceral experience.

Who says a Pontiac Fiero and Chevy Camaro are not suitable for the mud?

From the pint sized, four cylinder Suzuki Samurai’s, through to Jeeps of all kinds, Toyota 4Runners, Hummers and full size 4 x 4’s from decades ago, Mudfest attracts all types of enthusiasts to test their skill in the muddy farmland of Southwestern Ontario.

Here is an assortment of the machines at this year’s event.

Chevy and Ford lined up and ready to go –

And don’t forget the Rednecks…

Having attended twice now, the one thing that still surprises me is the broad appeal of Mudfest. For example, some people roll up in their shiny new daily drivers while others bring their well used SUV’s and there are also the folks who come with their fire breathing custom fabricated mud slingers on trailers to be thrashed about for the afternoon.

It really is a special event and worth experiencing if you are interested in trucks of any kind. Although trucks and 4×4’s are designed to be used and abused in the mud the reality is only 15% of them ever experience any type of off-road use so to witness them in action doing what engineers designed them for is enlightening. For more information about Mudfest, be sure to check out the Gopher Dunes page on Facebook.
