RIP Dave Mirra – 1974-2016

Some tragic news came out yesterday as police confirmed reports that Dave Mirra, one of the world’s best BMX freestyle riders and rally car drivers died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Greenville, North Carolina.

Authorities said they responded to an apparent suicide and discovered his body in a truck. Mirra, 41, was married with two children. He had been visiting friends in the area, officials said.

Growing up, Dave Mirra was an idol to me and my friends so this news really does hit home.  Mirra had super human talent and from all the coverage over the years he seemed like an absolute gem of a person which makes this all the more tragic.

Here is a recent tribute video of Dave Mirra.

Here are some older video highlights from Dave’s time as a driver for Team Subaru Rally USA.

Robby Gordon Dakar Rally

We have written about the Dakar Rally over the years and since it just wrapped up we thought it was time to revisit this epic adventure. We also want to acquaint you with the infamous wrecking ball off-road racer Robby Gordon, the sole American driver in this year’s truck group.  The son of “Baja Bob” Gordon, Robby Gordon has been off-road racing since before he was old enough to drive so he comes by it honestly.

As a North American racing fan, I truly love what Gordon is doing with running an US built original design called the HST Gordini. The custom-built machine leverages the Hummer H3T platform along with years of off-road experience and learning from the stadium truck racing circuit. Gordon has been able to dominate and win everything in off-road racing except for the elusive Dakar Rally.  Unfortunately, 2016 was not his year once again as he did not finish the race due to a very avoidable accident seen here.  At 29 seconds in the clip, Robbie makes contact with a Hummer support vehicle in his crew and has an accident. Thankfully no one was seriously injured but what a terrible way to go out.

Hopefully, next year things pan out differently for Robbie at Dakar and he can bring home the checkered flag to North America.  Check out some highlights from last year’s race and be sure to put the volume up to hear the 6.2L V8 scream under the hood of the Gordini!

New season, new race cars from Porsche AG

We’re already crazy Porsche fans here at RedlineNorth, so pretty much anything Porsche related gets us pumped up. However, this new promo video from the Porsche AG marketing department will make any racing fan warm and fuzzy on a cold winter day. Kudos to Porsche for hitting the mark with their 2016 racing season preview video.

Drivers! Start your engines!

Quality Car Porn from the Roar Before the Rolex 24

We wanted to share some close-up car porn from the various race teams doing their final testing this weekend at the Roar Before the Rolex 24.  Only a few more weeks until RedlineNorth will be on site in person covering the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Carroll Shelby Goes Racing

To keep with our recent racing theme we stumbled upon some amazing old video from the 1960’s narrated by Carroll Shelby. The video covers a brief history of Carroll’s racing career along with footage of legendary drivers Pete Brock, Ken Miles and Dan Gurney testing the Mustang GT 350, AC Cobra and Ford GT at Willow Springs International Raceway.  Yes, the footage is 1000 times worse than what a 10-year-old can shoot with their smartphone, but that is not the point – this is an homage to the glory years of America’s racing prowess.

Crazy Rich Guy Skeet Shoots From Porsche 911 Targa

We have to thank the gang over at Jalopnik for finding this one.  Not sure whether to love or hate the guy so I will let you decide but it’s unique nonetheless. I never would have thought skeet shooting and Porsche 911 Targa would be in the same sentence but alas it is here.

Proud Tennessean Dad To Be Reveals Baby’s Gender With Crazy Burnout

We wanted to share a very unique story we came across on Jalopnik. A proud Dad to be from Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee came up with a totally cool way of sharing the news of his baby gender reveal. We always appreciate a guy who incorporates cars into important family milestones!

As an owner of an import performance tuning business, George (the Dad) of Custom Concept Motorsports came up with the idea to fit his wife Coir’s turbo Toyota Supra with coloured smoke tires and do one massive burnout for friends and family. Who knew they even made these things but apparently they do.  He had the speciality tires shipped to his shop from his friends at East Coast Customs all the way in Brisbane, Australia. The colour would be blue if they were having a boy and red/pink if it was a girl. The results speak for themselves in the video below. George can do a serious burnout too!

Going for a Rip in Richard Petty’s 200 MPH Plymouth Superbird

With the Goodwood Festival of Speed just around the corner we wanted to show a cool video segment from our friend’s at Goodwood Road & Racing. They recently travelled across the pond to visit “The King” Richard Petty at his North Carolina headquarters as a warm-up to Richard attending the UK’s Festival of Speed at the end of June.

The trip appears to have been totally worth it because they got up close and personal with Richard and tour the shop with him as their guide. However, the real cherry on top came in the form of a ride along with Petty’s mechanic Larry who took Goodwood Road & Racing’s Andy out for an impromptu rip on the rural North Carolina roads in Petty’s decorated 1970 Plymouth “Superbird”.  Petty describes how the front and rear wings made the “Superbird” so stable and how it was near impossible to spin out driving the famous car.  Petty goes on to say that he has not driven the car since 1970 which seems like a real shame since we’d make it our daily grocery getter especially after hearing the epic sounds of its 625 horsepower. Make sure to turn up the volume for this one (scroll to 6:50 min)

Lewis Hamilton’s Pole Lap Shows How F1 Drivers Need “Grosses Boules”

It’s been a while since we covered F1 so we thought it was time to take a closer look at auto racing’s top league. As tomorrow is the Monaco Grand Prix, today was the practise day and reigning champion and current series points leader Lewis Hamilton showed why he earns the big bucks (he just signed a new £100m contract).

For those of you who think the F1 boys are just a bunch of soft “diva” drivers you need to check this out.  Today’s pole position winning ride from Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes proves you must have major league “grosses boules” as an F1 driver to let it all hang out and put down a fast lap at this infamous street circuit.
