Going for a Rip in Richard Petty’s 200 MPH Plymouth Superbird

With the Goodwood Festival of Speed just around the corner we wanted to show a cool video segment from our friend’s at Goodwood Road & Racing. They recently travelled across the pond to visit “The King” Richard Petty at his North Carolina headquarters as a warm-up to Richard attending the UK’s Festival of Speed at the end of June.

The trip appears to have been totally worth it because they got up close and personal with Richard and tour the shop with him as their guide. However, the real cherry on top came in the form of a ride along with Petty’s mechanic Larry who took Goodwood Road & Racing’s Andy out for an impromptu rip on the rural North Carolina roads in Petty’s decorated 1970 Plymouth “Superbird”.  Petty describes how the front and rear wings made the “Superbird” so stable and how it was near impossible to spin out driving the famous car.  Petty goes on to say that he has not driven the car since 1970 which seems like a real shame since we’d make it our daily grocery getter especially after hearing the epic sounds of its 625 horsepower. Make sure to turn up the volume for this one (scroll to 6:50 min)

Lewis Hamilton’s Pole Lap Shows How F1 Drivers Need “Grosses Boules”

It’s been a while since we covered F1 so we thought it was time to take a closer look at auto racing’s top league. As tomorrow is the Monaco Grand Prix, today was the practise day and reigning champion and current series points leader Lewis Hamilton showed why he earns the big bucks (he just signed a new £100m contract).

For those of you who think the F1 boys are just a bunch of soft “diva” drivers you need to check this out.  Today’s pole position winning ride from Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes proves you must have major league “grosses boules” as an F1 driver to let it all hang out and put down a fast lap at this infamous street circuit.

It’s official, Jeremy Clarkson is out and Top Gear will never be the same

Well it’s official, Jeremy Clarkson has been fired from the BBC. The story has finally emerged about his sudden suspension back on March 10th as the BBC provided the full details from their resulting investigation.

Jeremy Clarkson

Jeremy Clarkson

Jeremy Clarkson’s contract will not be renewed after an “unprovoked physical attack” on a Top Gear producer, the BBC’s director general has confirmed as of about 6 hours ago.

In terms of timeline –

Clarkson was suspended on 10 March, following what was called by BBC a “fracas” with Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon. The physical altercation, which took place in a Yorkshire hotel, was said to have occurred because no hot food was provided following a day’s filming.

During the physical attack Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip.”  The attack lasted “around 30 seconds and was halted by the intervention of a witness. The report went on to document that verbal abuse was sustained over a longer period and contained the strongest expletives and threats to sack Mr Tymon, who believed he had lost his job.

Well, the times are a changing as it sure does seem like celebrities are getting away with bad behaviour less today compared to days past.  All of which is likely a good thing, it is just sad that it happened to our favourite show Top Gear and at its peak.

Top Gear today is a global phenomena with an estimated 350 million viewers worldwide, making it the most watched show on TV. Originally created in 1977, as a regional television motoring show produced by BBC Midlands it has gone on and reinvented itself several times and time will tell what its future holds. We sincerely hope the show goes on for the BBC and its global audience but with the rumour mill already swirling it seems unlikely things will be status quo. The latest news about Clarkson suggests he is already in talks with Netflix and with Hammond and May alluding to them all being a package deal change looks likely.

Road Rage caught on dash cam in Vancouver, BC

We are not exactly sure what happened to make the guy in the white Suzuki get out of his car and give the guy in the black Jetta a quick right hand but something must have happened.  Nevertheless, violence is never the answer and Suzuki man behaves like a total jerk as he gives Jetta man a pretty good sucker punch through the window.  Filmed in Vancouver, BC on a dash cam, the really cool part of this story is how Vancouver Police dealt with the road rage culprit.  I say, bravo Canada! Way to go on getting the bad guy. It’s always nice to see justice in action. Check it out for yourself here.

Update on Adam Tang, Canadian Outlaw Stunt Racer

We wanted to give an update on an interesting story that first surfaced back in the Fall. This story starts in August 2013 when a Canadian born, commodities trader by the name of Adam Tang got behind the wheel of his Z4 BMW, and made history with a record-breaking drive around Manhattan.

Upon completing this crazy feat, Tang uploaded his video online and that’s when the trouble began.  It wasn’t long before the video became an online sensation, but it also resulted in attention from NYC’s “boys in blue” who did not look kindly at his little stunt.  Later on in 2014, the NYPD arrested Tang for reckless driving and reckless endangerment. The video he posted online does show some close calls on New York streets, as Tang swerves in an out of traffic but he claims he never went over 160 km/hr and ran only one red light. Having decided a conviction was a foregone conclusion, Tang says he packed a suitcase and hopped into his 2006 BMW Z4 that he had used to illegally lap the city. Only this time he drove it out-of-town and back to his native Canada. This was in early November and in spite of him leaving NYC things kept moving ahead with the court case and on Dec. 8, 2014 a jury convicted Tang in absentia of reckless endangerment and reckless driving. At his sentencing hearing, a punishment of one year behind bars was passed down. But not to worry since Tang is confident he won’t be extradited back to the States. “I did my research and I talked to Canadian lawyers, who literally laughed at me on the phone saying ‘It ain’t going to happen.”

Known online by the moniker of “Afroduck“, Tang wanted to become a Youtube sensation and driving was his ticket. From all accounts he obsessed about cars and driving was his outlet so it’s no surprise that as he grew older he became more interested in the underground stunt driving world.  Growing up as an only child in an affluent Calgary suburb, Adam turned to video games and car culture during his teen years. And his car pedigree started off strong with an old model Range Rover as his first ride at the age of sixteen.  While living in Manhattan as a trader, he became interested in making his mark and that’s when breaking a legendary Manhattan driving record became his focus.

There is a little more to this story which you can read all about at the various different outlets. And to be clear, we are not condoning Adam’s law breaking incident however, we do we wish Adam all the luck in playing his predicament into a lucrative book deal or documentary film.

Check out Adam’s drive to fame video here.

Corvette Go-Cart vs. 2014 Lingenfelter C7

The boys over at Motor Trend Channel’s “Roadkill” show have had some crazy fun taking apart a 1985 Corvette C4 and turning it into a supreme go-cart. Having grown up with a mighty 8.5 horsepower powered go-cart I was curious to see what a 300 horsepower version was all about.

As I’m not too interested in the high-priced Lingenfelter Corvette, the real fun for me starts at 18 minutes when they hit the track and at 24 minutes when they head out to the desert. At only $10,000 in parts, the Corvette Cart has got to be the best “bang for buck” racer ever…..

Canadian Star Trek “Boogie” Van is up for sale

We could not pass up sharing this story that came out in a number of news outlets including Jalopnik and the Toronto Star recently.  A Vancouver man has put his 1978 GMC G15 Vandura “Boogie Van up for sale on Craigslist.

This is no ordinary van.  It’s covered with Star Trek themed murals including images of the cast mates of the original show along with a topless alien woman. Interestingly, the airbrushed designs were all painted by Toronto artist Gordon S. Roy in 1980.  I will let you come to your own decision on this one, but you do have to admit it seems like quite the vehicle for only $9500.

The Ultimate Redneck Ford Bronco

The team over at Motor Trend’s Dirt Every Day, builds the coolest 4×4 trucks ever driven in the bush.  On a recent episode they have outdone themselves once again with an insane 1979 Ford Bronco which has been modified to house a Dillon Aero’s M134D Minigun in the back. Seriously, what is more bad ass than a “Redneck Bronco” with a gatling gun that can shoot 3-4,000 rounds per minute. Be sure to skip to 17:28 to check out the minigun in action.

New Dodge Viper Documentary Fights Winter Blues

The first week back after the holidays is always tough but this week’s extreme cold has not helped shake the winter blues. However, have no fear since our good friends at Dodge have out done themselves with a newly created 22 minute documentary titled “Viper: DNA of a Supercar.  The new online video showcases how the Dodge Viper is created like no other sports car – with a relentless attention to detail originality and handcraftmanship.

The film can be viewed at driveSRT.com/2015/viper/documentary.  After watching this video, I can guarantee you will want to order one of these 645 horsepower fire-breathing dragons.  And we are always ready to give the Motor City a shout out, so how cool is it that the Viper is built in Detroit?

We are especially looking forward to seeing what the manufacturers have up their sleeves next week at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show.
