2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Unveiled back in October at the 2014 Paris Auto Show, the new Land Rover Discovery Sport is aimed at delivering legendary off-road ability at a price point that won’t break the bank. Available in both a five and seven seat configuration the 2015 Discovery Sport offers an updated sleek design with enhanced technology compared to the LR2 model it replaces.

The Sport’s standard powertrain is a 2.0L, 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine shared with the Range Rover Evoque. This is mated to a full-time all-wheel drive system with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

True to its roots, the Discovery Sport provides rugged capability with ground clearance of 212 mm, towing capacity of 2500kg and the ability to wade through water up to two feet deep. With a full size spare fitted to the five seater and a space saver in the seven seater it provides the confidence to take it off-road.

Starting at $37,995 USD the new Land Rover Discovery Sport is priced well in the crowded luxury compact SUV market. The final sticker price can climb dramatically with additional features so buyer beware but let’s be honest it’s a Land Rover after all.  If you are crazy budget conscious this is likely not the vehicle for you.

We are glad to see Land Rover is updating its line-up and are looking forward to getting some seat time behind the wheel in 2015 when these models hit our streets.

100 Vintage Cars Discovered on French Farm Worth at least £12 million

In today’s world of Wikipedia not much is left to the imagination and certainly finding hidden treasure has become a rarity.  So this story is just so darn cool we had to cover it since as auto enthusiasts the barn find is the Holy Grail.

After calling in auctioneer’s to the family farm, the grandchildren of French transport magnate Roger Baillon discovered that the 100 dirt-covered cars that had decayed away undisturbed for decades could now be worth £12 million or more at auction.

Of course these are not your average vintage cars as they range from 1930s-1950s models from all the great European brands, such as Bugatti, Porsche, Maserati and Ferrari. Although most of the vehicles were only covered by a shed roof exposing them to the elements, two very special sports cars were hidden away in a garage. The two cars are a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider with covered headlights which is one of only 37 ever made. The second one is a 1956 Maserati A6G Gran Sport Frua.

The Collectors’ Car Department at Artcurial, a French auction house, recently discovered the incredible collection.  They will be putting up the entire collection for auction in Paris on February 6th, 2015.

‘We found ourselves overcome with emotion. Probably much like Lord Carrington and Howard Carter, on being the first person for centuries to enter Tutankhamun’s tomb,” stated Matthieu Lamoure, Managing Director of Artcurial Motorcars. “This really is a treasure. No doubt a once-in-a-lifetime discovery.”

Roger Baillon’s collection, beginning around 1950, was nearly twice as big as the number recently discovered.  One Talbot-Lago in the collection had previously been owned by Egyptian King Farouk and a Ferrari had been used in the filming of a movie with Jane Fonda. Along with the rare Maserati in this collection, Baillon had intended to build a museum with his collection. However, when things didn’t go as expected, he was forced to sell 50 of his beloved cars, and the rest of the collection was just parked and literally forgotten about until now.  Hopefully these world-class beauties will be restored to their original greatness and shared in museums around the world.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens Official Teaser Trailer

Being a child of the late 1970s I could not resist doing something on the new Star Wars film.  Yes, I realize it is not car news per say, but the vehicles in the Star Wars franchise are très worthy in my eyes.  From speed bikes to X-Wing fighters to the unstoppable Millennium Falcon, futuristic hyperspeed machines should appeal to any car enthusiast.  In a world where fast means warp speed it is only fitting that the latest episode of the epic Star Wars series looks ever as memorable as the earlier ones.  Check out the new teaser trailer for The Force Awakens….

How To Turn A 1990 Dodge Airport Tug Into A Trail Slayer

The folks over at 4-Wheel & Off-Road turned a well-used airplane tug truck into a killer off-road machine while keeping it street legal. This project was done over nine Herculean days before the so-called Ultimate Adventure 2014, and the team over at Drive Dirt Everyday has kindly documented the whole build process on video.

The vehicle started life as a 1990 Dodge tug truck that hauled around airplanes for a living. The team kept the Cummins six-cylinder diesel, but tossed out almost everything else replacing the stock parts for either custom one-off fabricated parts or custom heavy-duty parts. The build process certainly looks like a ton of work, but the end result created one fantastic crawler. Check out the video above.

It’s that time of year again and Ken Block has outdone himself!

Earlier today, Hoonigan, Ford and Need For Speed posted Ken Block’s Gymkhana SEVEN – Wild in the Streets: Los Angeles.  Having covered the epic “Gymkhana video series” for the past few years there is nothing in the world like it and Ken Block has certainly upped the ante with this new installment.

With some help from the Hollywood Hills and post apocalyptic Los Angeles, Ken and his corporate A-team of sponsors sure know how to make the ultimate drifting video.

This new video captures all the sounds and sheer genius skill of Ken Block as he tears through LA in his custom 1965, 845 horsepower fire-breathing Mustang. Honestly, enough of our words, just go ahead and enjoy this 12 minute video and be glad you don’t have to pay for Kenny’s tire bill.

Dodge Challenger Hellcats Leave Brampton for Dealers

Dodge has released this very cool video showing the first batch of the fire-breathing 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT® Hellcats being loaded up at Fiat-Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario assembly plant.  With a sticker price of only $63,995 CDN the Hellcat is amazingly priced considering it comes with a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® SRT V8 engine, producing an unprecedented 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque making it the most powerful Dodge V8 and Challenger model ever.

As one of the most talked about cars of the year it’s no surprise the car racked up more than 4,500 orders in just the five days after orders opened in September.

After watching this video I totally want one!

And yes that is Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart” banging in the background.

Taylor Swift Smashes an AC Cobra with a Golf Club in New Blank Space Video

Taylor Swift is not someone we tend to follow with any sort of interest but the 24-year old American superstar has just launched a new video for her Blank Space single and cars play a huge role.

In the pop idol’s new video, Taylor plays a severely hot-headed girlfriend with revenge on her mind as she runs around ruining a beautiful AC Cobra with a golf club.  Similar to many jilted lovers of the past, Taylor rages after seeing her boyfriend texting another women and the boyfriend’s classic Cobra takes the brunt of the jealousy. If you can’t stomach the entire video just click on 3:15 to get to the the car destruction.

Moral of this story – When your boyfriend cheats, you can do whatever you want to him, but please don’t touch his car especially if it is a classic!  The only good news is we are sure it is a replica since they always are but still the director should have used something less iconic.

Lamborghini Huracán

The Lamborghini Huracán is Lamborghini’s new replacement for its sales leader and most produced car, the Gallardo.  With more than 14,000 copies of the Gallardo sold over two generations the Huracán certainly has big shoes to fill.

The all new Huracán picks up where the Gallardo left off. Like its predecessor, the Huracán has a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated, 5.2-liter V-10 engine. This direct-injected power plant pumps 610 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. The new Huracán has a ton of shared technology with Audi’s next generation R8 due to Volkswagen Group’s ownership of Lamborghini.

Capable of zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds, and zero to 124 mph (200 kph) in 9.9 seconds with a top speed of approx 201 mph the Huracán is a true super car. Its blistering speeds are a result of the unbelievable horsepower to weight ratio of 2.36 kg (5.20 lb) per horsepower.  With a curb weight of only 1,422 kg (3,135 lb), the car’s chassis is made of carbon fiber and aluminium, destined to please the speed demons.

Having been recently released, the Huracán is now making the rounds to the world’s top tier auto journalists. One of these first reviews comes from the UK’s Autocar who took the Huracán for a spin on the UK roads along with their favourite test track.  Make sure you turn the volume up to take in the sensory experience of what it is like to drive a Lambo.  We have to agree with the video reviewer as it really is one of the prettiest Lambo designed in the last 25 years. Bravo Lamborghini or should I say Audi AG!

2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Review

Brian Makse from Autonet has just published his review of the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3. The Porsche 911 GT3 is the ultimate enthusiast car as it is stripped down, powered up and race prepped for the track. The folks who ordered these cars have waited a while for delivery as a result of a major manufacture engine issue.  As a result, anticipation has been immense since everyone has been very curious to see what the final product would be on the track.  Well, good news Porsche has fixed the engine issue and the models are now being delivered to buyers.  And judging from Brian’s review and video this new Porsche does not disappoint and is 100% worth the wait.  We so wish we were behind the wheel of this beast on the German test track as you could not ask for more fun.  Some guys really do have all the luck!

The boys at Evo take a Ferrari F40 through the Swiss Alps

Having written about the infamous Ferrari F40 several times as it’s one of our all time favourite cars we could not pass on this story.  Recently, UK-based supercar reviewers Evo got behind the wheel of a beautiful Ferrari F40 for a 1000 KM drive. Starting in Zürich, Switzerland and finishing back in Britain  they were tasked with driving this supercar darling back to its wealthy English owner.  After filming themselves drive this masterpiece on some of the World’s best mountain roads it’s no wonder the average car guy/gal envies these car journalists more than life itself. Not surprisingly, getting behind the wheel of a Ferrari F40 is certainly near the top of most car folks’ bucket list.  Our only complaint about the video is they do a tad more talking than we would have liked.
